افتراضي Afghanistan says ** ban imposed on Pak currency

ISLAMABAD: In the aftermath of decision made by an Afghan province to impose ban on carrying all foreign currencies, Pakistan on Monday raised this issue with Kabul’s ambassador in Pakistan whereby assurances were given that there was ** Pakistan specific restriction and rupee was easily convertible in all parts of the country.

Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar made telephone call to Afghan Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal and raised Islamabad’s concerns over these accounts. Both of them discussed the reported ban on the holding of Pakistani rupee in Afghanistan during their conversation.

“The Afghan government has imposed ** such restriction on the holding of Pakistani currency and it is freely convertible like other currencies,” said the ambassador. There were media reports that the police chief of Kandahar province in Afghanistan has banned the use of Pakistani currency in the key southern province.

The Afghan province had imposed restrictions for carrying foreign currencies in theircountry including Pakistani rupee that caused concerns among Pakistani government circles for adopting discriminatory attitude towards Islamabad.

Subsequent to the telephonic conversation with Dar, the Afghan ambassador issued a statement in which he stated, “For clarification, as per our Central Bank's law, regular transactions in all foreign currencies, except our own currency - the Afghani, are **t allowed; it is **w more strictly enforced. However, ** foreign currency without exception is disallowed to be freely convertible in our money exchange markets anywhere in our country. This is essentially the same practice in every other country and certain media reports with a particular different portrayal are therefore misleading.” Ishaq Dar appreciated the clarification and expressed hope that it will facilitate the business activities between the two countries.
