MQM dismisses allegations against Waseem Akhtar
KARACHI: The Muttahida Quami Movement's (MQM) Rabita Committee has termed the recent allegations leveled against Waseem Akhtar as baseless and untrue.
According to details, a press release issued by the Rabita Committee termed the allegations that Waseem Akhtar had confessed to being involved in the May 12 violence that had taken place in Karachi, as baseless. Police claimed on Tuesday that Akhtar had confessed to issuing orders to MQM workers to carry out killings in the city and instigated violence on May 12. The press release also recounted the December 27, 2007 incident when former Prime Minister and PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto was killed in a gun-and-bomb attack in Rawalpindi. The Rabita Committee also questioned as to how the police stood helplessly as the resulting violence and anarchy from Benazir's death engulfed the whole country. On May 12, 2007, more than 50 people died and scores were injured as various political parties' workers exchanged fire in Karachi. The then-deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was leading a rally of lawyers and workers from other parties had joined his cause. MQM had always denied the charge of initiating the violence on May 12 and has claimed that it lost its own workers as well.
