Some owners have given anchors free hand; if Karachi’s true picture had been presented, MQM would have been finished and PML-N could have been defeated in elections; Qandeel Baloch was murdered because of race for rating among some channels; close-ups of young girls are shown; Pemra avoids taking action that may harm working journalists’ interests; ** dispute with owners except on implementation of code of conduct
FAISALABAD: Pakistani private television Channels are flagrantly violating the code of conduct, unanimously prepared by the channel owners and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, said Pemra Chairman Absar Alam while talking to the media here on Tuesday. He said Pemra had become helpless because it could **t fully check vulgarity, being spread by a few Pakistani TV channels. He said the government had given full liberty to the Channels but, according to a world report, our media was misusing the facility. He said the media was considered to be the fourth pillar of a state, but in Pakistan it was **t focussing on crucial issues and events, but only politics. Absar Alam said the media organisations were misusing their liberty by maligning their opponents, but they hesitate to highlight the achievements of the elected government. He said even the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) and PTV Home do **t show programmes on agriculture. The Pemra chief came down hard on an anchor, who posed himself as an Islamic scholar but showed vulgar songs on the channel during Ramazan but did **t showed the atrocities committed against the Kashmir freedom-fighters by the Indian forces. He said unwanted programmes were being telecasted by some Channels which showed that they were **t loyal to the country. He said some Channels were showing highly objectionable programmes, but Pemra refrains from taking action against them as it would be detrimental to working journalists. He said after 2008, the electronic media in Pakistan lost its credibility by telecasting unfounded programmes. He said if the TV had presented a true picture of Karachi, MQM have so far been finished and PML-N might have defeated in elections. Absar Alam said it was regrettable that some influential people had launched their TV Channels for protection of their self and their businesses. Quoting an example, he said the Channels were focussing on model Ayyan Ali and showing close-ups of young girls and women in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) public meetings, and thus abusing their liberty everyday. He said that except for implementation of the code of conduct, he had ** dispute with the channel owners. He admitted that Pemra had failed to stop showing of highly objectionable and semi-nude advertisements on a number of TV channels. He pointed out that totally false and concocted breaking news were being released and even an anchor, who broadcast false news about the marriage of Imran Khan, did **t apologise over showing of the baseless news on a TV channel. He said such owners of TV Channels had converted their Channels into shopping malls by giving free hand to their anchors, who had confined their TV channel programmes to three big cities of the country. He said that if we could improve our TV Channels system, it would help strengthen democracy in the country and our constitution would be safe. He said unfortunately, the majority of our media was weakening the three other pillars of the state. He said Pakistani Channels should avoid misusing their powers and like developed countries should confined their programmes to development. He alleged that Qandeel Baloch was murdered due to the race among some TV Channels to boost their ratings. Unfortunately, an oil-dealer was given the permission to run a TV channel, and when Pemra took action, it got stay order from a court, which was cancelled by the same court on Pemra petition. Absar Alam said Pemra imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on a TV channel for showing unethical programmes and the apex court summoned him, observing that the fine was **t adequate and why Pemra was **t cancelling licence of the TV channel. However, Pemra refrained from taking such actions to save journalists from being rendered jobless. Meanwhile, he spoke at a seminar on the “Role of electronic media in eco**my and agriculture sector in Pakistan” as the chief guest. He said agricultural content needed to be made an essential part of electronic media headlines to guide people, especially from rural area, about the latest trends in agriculture as majority of our population is living in villages. The session, presided over by University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan, was organised by the Public Relations and Public Relations Department, UAF. He urged the business class of Faisalabad to fund an agriculture-based TV channel at the UAF for the farming community of the country. He said that according to Article 19 of Constitution of Pakistan, every citizen should have the right to freedom of speech and expression, and there should be freedom of the press, subject to any reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the interest of the glory of Islam or the integrity, security or defence of Pakistan or any part thereof friendly relations with foreign states, public order, decency or morality, or in relation to contempt of court, [commission of] or incitement to an offence.” Vice Chancellor Prof Iqrar Ahmad urged the media to give proper time for agriculture sector. In the welcome address, Principal ******r Public Relations and Publications Dr Jalal Arif said that journalism played an important role for the development of the country. أكثر... ??????? ??????: Channels do **t focus on*Kashmir atrocities, government progress: Pemra chief || ??????: ahlam1399 || ??????: اسم منتداك
