The loose coalition, whose unity has always been delicate and doubtful, virtually stands k**cked down as all other parties will **t be part of any public protest. Rather they will stay in the sidelines, ig**ring the PTI agitation. It is also likely that they will come in the open to oppose the protest. It was widely predicted that the PTI would **t go along the opposition alliance and would at last go into the practical protest mode because it feels that its entire politics is inconsequential unless it keeps the streets hot. The PTI chief took the decision to launch the nationwide agitation from August 7 a day after the opposition alliance rejected his demand to start the street agitation. It also reflected that the PTI is disenchanted with the opposition grouping and reached the conclusion that it has to heat up the streets all alone. However, Imran Khan kept the precise contours of the protest a closely guarded secret. He did **t seem to be in a hurry to stage a**ther sit-in saying that he would first awaken the people and then opt for it. Perhaps, the PTI has in view the 2014 sit-in that failed to produce the desired results. Additionally, except for the initial days, it became a laughing stock due to **n-participation of people. For fund raising, Imran Khan wanted all the three million PTI workers to contribute Rs100 each for the protest campaign. His entire thrust and focus is on seeking accountability of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family on the issue of offshore companies and other corruption charges. He would say goodbye to his agitation if the government accepts all the Terms of Reference (ToRs) of the opposition and forms a judicial commission for investigation into the offshore shells. After five days, the PTI will stage a demonstration in front of the ******s of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on July 25, protesting the anti-graft agency’s decision to drop the money laundering case against Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and press for probe by it against the prime minister on the issue of offshore companies. The immediate reason behind the PTI’s decision to protest against the NAB was the closure of 15-year old case against Dar. However, it ig**red the hard fact, proved from the official record of the NAB that for nearly a dozen times, the agency, even during successive governments hugely hostile to Ishaq Dar and the Sharif brothers, which were hell-bent upon framing them, concluded that the case should be wrapped up as there is ** worthwhile evidence available to indict him. However, it was kept pending for their political victimisation. When Imran Khan hurled allegations ad nauseam, the NAB, in a clarification, decried what it dubbed as the uninformed, politically motivated opinions by the PTI chief. “The successive investigation teams and prosecution authorities repeatedly recommended the closure of probe. The investigation, pending for over 15 years, was conducted strictly in accordance with law and procedure.” The clarification stated that the NAB discharges its statutory mandate with utmost objectivity without any bias for or against any person, political party or institution, he said. It reminded that it is a matter of record that the NAB has also closed an inquiry against Tariq Shafi, referred by Financial Monitoring Unit of State Bank of Pakistan, for suspect transactions. أكثر... |
