Syed Ali Geelani urges nations to stop India's 'reign of terror'
SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir's most prominent pro-freedom activist and leader Syed Ali Geelani wrote a letter to various nations on Monday, urging them to stop India's 'reign of terror' in the province.
In his letter, Geelani stated that there was a need to 'accept disputed nature of J&K, repeal Armed Forces Special Powers Act and start a rapid demilitarisation process immediately'. The letter has been sent to the heads of the United nations Security Council members as well as regional organizations such as the European Union, ASEAN, OIC and SAARC. The letter was also addressed to Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. "These countries have a special responsibility to intervene to stop this reign of terror by India in J&K...create an atmosphere conducive for the resolution of the dispute of Jammu & Kashmir as per the principle of Right to Self Determination," he wrote. Tensions have been high in Jammu and Kashmir since more than a week, after protests erupted when the Indian army killed freedom fighter Burhan Wani. Clashes between the Indian army and protesters erupted in Jammu and Kashmir in which more than forty people were martyred and as many as three thousand were injured.
