Indian court bans 169 service providers from releasing Tamil star Rajnikanth?s movie
225 websites also barred from illegally downloading film ‘Kabali’
LAHORE: The arbiters at the Madras High court have issued an interim order to ban 169 service providers, including 225 websites, from illegally releasing 65-year old Tamil superstar Rajnikanth’s film “Kabali” after film producer S. Thanu had moved the court seeking to prevent the movie’s unlawful downloads and copyright infringement. The film’s producer, in his writ petition, had sought a court direction to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to issue instructions to all service providers to block the websites offering illegal download of the aforementioned movie that was protected by the copyright law. The petitioner had enclosed the screenshot of a site, which claimed that visitors could access 30 films at the rate of 12,000 downloads. The counsel prayed he had arranged a live demo of a**ther website for the court in order to prove that an entire feature film could be downloaded for as little as Rs10, and from that single copy, several thousand copies could be made and sold in the black market. The lawyer had also contended that while the pirates only made Rs20 to 30 a copy, the total loss was incurred by the producers, artists and others involved in making of the film whose production cost ran into dozens of millions of Rupees. Tamil actor Rajnikanth (real name Shivaji Rao Gaekwad) has starred in more than 170 Indian ******. He is the winner of numerous prestigious ho**urs like the “Padma Bhushan” Award, the "Centenary Award for Indian Film Personality of the Year” and the “Padma Vibhushan” Award.
