US State Department parries questions about Kashmir dispute
WASHINGTON: US State Department Spokesman John Kirby on Tuesday parried a couple of questions about Indian atrocities and status of Kashmir as Indian forces continue to kill protesters in the valley, taking the death toll to over 30.
Asked whether US considered Kashmir a disputed territory and whether situation in the region was India’s internal matter, State Department Spokesman John Kirby said he would stick with his remarks he made during a press briefing on Monday. On Monday, he had expressed concern over violence in occupied Kashmir, urging “all sides to make efforts towards finding a peaceful resolution”. When a reporter drew his attention toward a report by Press Trust of India (PTI) that quoted him saying situation in Kashmir was an internal matter of India, he said:"I will tell you exactly what I said. I said we’ve seen reports of the clashes between protesters and Indian forces in Kashmir, we’re concerned by the violence, we encourage all sides to make efforts towards finding a peaceful solution, and I said I would refer you to the government of India for any more specific information about those clashes". “I think I did a pretty good job answering it yesterday. I’m going to stick with that,” John Kirby said.
