Drains in Lakki city clogged ahead of monsoon rains
LAKKI MARWAT: The clogged drainage system in the city is posing a threat to the local residents with monsoon season approaching fast.
The residents complained that Drains were clogged in almost all parts of the urban locality and the Tehsil Municipal Administration seemed disinterested to launch cleanliness and de-silting drive. The apathy on part of the Tehsil Municipal Administration authorities and bigwigs of local government has turned the major town of the district into a city of filth and garbage. Last year the monsoon rains exposed the faulty and poor drainage system in urban locality as flashfloods had caused large scale disaster but authorities concerned didn’t pay any heed to rectify and overhaul it. Flashfloods caused human losses and damaged properties besides making people homeless in Michenkhel, Saeedkhel, Khoidadkhel, Dall Mills Area, Graban and other localities of Lakki city, the previous year. Several localities are still prone to the floods due to clogged drains. The choked Drains and heaps of garbage dumped in streets and lanes, if **t cleaned and *******, will make the citizens to face the hazards of flashfloods this year too. The residents say they repeatedly requested local government representatives to direct authorities of municipal administration to launch a cleanliness drive before Eidul Fitr, but to ** avail. “The campaign to clean the clogged Drains of filth and garbage with the help of heavy machinery has been completed successfully in Naurang town”, said a social activist. He said the drive would help make the urban locality clean and beautiful and reduce flood threats.But the situation is quite different in Lakki city where majority of Drains are **t covered and therefore local residentsespecially traders throw rubbish in them. Every year the roads and streets are submerged under rainwater in monsoon season due to poor drainage system in Lakki city. The main entrance to Haqdadabad, the most congested locality of Lakki city, presents the look of a pool of stagnant water as ** proper cleaning of Drains has been carried out for the last several weeks. The Drains in Mehmood Street of the same urban area are also blocked since long causing spread of stench and bad odor. A local resident said that Member Provincial Assembly Munawar Khan and Tehsil Nazim Hidayatullah Khan visited the locality several times and promised carpeting of street and repairing broken drains. “But the lawmaker as well as tehsil nazim couldn’t fulfill promises so far leaving the people with the single option to face troubles and mi******,” he added.
