Investigation ******r confirms illegal assets case closed for lack of proof

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ehtesab Commission (KPEC) has said Sufficient evidence is available against former provincial minister Ziaullah Afridi in four other cases filed against him and the probe into only one case pertaining to the illegal assets has been closed.

The KPEC Investigation ******r recently submitted a report in the Ehtesab Court and said that the commission had closed illegal assets case against the former provincial minister. It was stated in the report that the commission couldn’t find Sufficient evidence in the assets case and, therefore, it has been closed. However, the commission said Sufficient evidence was available against him in four other cases.

The Ehtesab Court, the commission said, had fixed July 12 for hearing into the cases against the former minister. Member Provincial Assembly Ziaullah Afridi was arrested on July 9, last year when he was the provincial mines minister. He was a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader but his membership was suspended by the party after he accused Chief Minister Pervez Khattak of ‘engineering’ his arrest.

The Ehtesab Commission had initially charged him with carrying out illegal postings and transfers and facilitating illegal mining in the province. Later, he was charged in two other cases as well.

Ziaullah Afridi was accused of facilitating illegal extension in the lease of chromite mines in Charsadda and facilitating illegal mining of phosphate in Abbottabad. The KPEC had filed the fourth reference of Rs1.34 billion against former mines and mineral provincial minister in the Ehtesab Court about his alleged involvement in illegal mining of Tangi Chromite.

Besides, a reference regarding facilitating illegal mining of phosphate in Abbottabad, the commission also filed a reference against Ziaullah Afridi and three ******rs of the department for the alleged misuse of power for illegal appointments, transfers and postings.

However, a division bench of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) comprising Chief Justice Mazhar Alam Miankhel and Justice Mohammad Daud Khan had directed the Ehtesab Court to conduct the ‘single trial’ of Ziaullah Afridi, who was arrested on multiple charges, in accordance with the provisions of the KP Ehtesab Commission Act once all the references were filed against him.

The bench had issued the directives while disposing of a petition filed by Ziaullah against the preparation of more cases against him at a time when he is facing trial in one reference.
