افتراضي PM advises president to remit sentences of prisoners on Eid

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday advised the president to remit the sentences of convicts imprisoned for various crimes on the Eidul Fitr.

The president would grant these remissions in pursuance of the approved policy in exercise of his powers under Article 45 of the Constitution providing for special remission in sentence on the occasions of the Eidul Fitr, the Eid Miladun Nabi, the Pakistan Day and the Independence Day.

So the president has granted 90-day remission to prisoners jailed for life. The remission, however, would **t be admissible for those convicted of murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, Zina, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping and terrorist acts.

The prime minister also advised the president for remission of 45 days in sentence to all other convicts except the condemned prisoners and those convicted of murder, espionage, anti-state activities, terrorist acts, Zina, kidnapping, robbery, dacoity and those undergoing sentence under the Foreigners Act 1946. The special remissions will be admissible if the convicts have undergone two-thirds of their substantive imprisonment. The prime minister advised total remission to male prisoners who are aged 65 or above and have undergone at least one-third of their substantive sentence except those involved in culpable homicide and terrorist acts.

The president was advised to grant total remission to female prisoners aged 60 or above and have undergone at least one-third of their sentence except those involved in culpable homicide and terrorist acts.

The president was advised to grant special remission of one year to female prisoners who have been accompanying children and are imprisoned for crimes other than culpable homicide and terrorist acts.

The prime minister advised grant of total remission to juvenile convicts under 18 years of age, who have served one-third of their substantive sentence except those involved in culpable homicide, terrorist acts, Zina, robbery, dacoity and kidnapping.
