Shortly after the outbreak of World War I in the summer of 1914, the German Army advanced to the eastern outskirts of Paris. They were repelled by an Allied victory in the First Battle of the Marne, but the French capital remained uncomfortably close to the front lines for much of the war.

With the introduction of combat airplanes and zeppelins, Paris became vulnerable to bombardment from the sky. Air raids were increasingly frequent as Germany attempted to push for a quick victory in 1918
