On Sunday night, Jesse Williams had the audience at the BET Awards on their feet when he delivered a rousing, memorable speech about social justice, the Black Lives Matter movement, and other important racial issues in America. The Grey's Anatomy star, who was a teacher before he pursued acting full-time, opened up to People about how many of the problems he touched on in his speech start in our country's school systems. "Words are only as good as the response to those words, but I'd like to think That I give People a Sense That They are **t alone," he said. "Otherwise we are treating the symptoms and **t the sickness."
Jesse also touched on the fact That schools are guilty of **t properly teaching the history of African people. "If we keep poisoning our children to believe That we are **thing and That white People are everything, that's when it finds itself reflected in the way we treat each other," he continued. "It's **t That complicated. The truth we are teaching is That every contribution in the history of the planet came from blond people. It's **t true and it's destructive and People are getting killed long-term as a result. People don't believe That we deserve it."
In addition to shining a light on the problems That plague America's schools generally, the actor - who has two young children, Maceo and Sadie - revealed how these struggles affect the way he views his role as a parent, and how he aims to fix it. "We **w have access to more information to view as a parent," he said. "I grew up in a really horrible school system, but my parents did **t let That define how we function. They gave me more work at home from them than I ever got from school. To learn about the history of myself and my people, and That armors me. Whether you are reading about Frederick Douglas or you are reading about all the black inventors in the country That invented so many things That we touch and feel every day, or you can get really heavy with the history of African civilization, there is a lot in between."
