Appeal against ex-minister’s sentence

ISLAMABAD: It is better **t to refer Hamid Saeed Kazmi as a religious scholar as there were many ‘religious scholars’ on TV screens these days, remarked the Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Mohammad Anwar Khan Kasi here on Monday.

The IHC CJ was hearing in the writ petition of Pakistan People’s Party’s former Federal Minister for religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi, who has challenged his 16 years imprisonment sentence in the Haj corruption case.

While hearing the case, the IHC CJ interrupted legal counsel for Kazmi, Sardar Lateef Khosa, and said that he better **t refer Kazmi as a religious scholar as Allah doesn’t forgive those who create problems for Haj pilgrims.

Advocate Khosa at that juncture responded that Qandeel Baloch should **t call herself Baloch. Hearing in the case was adjourned till June 29 after the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sought time to argue in this matter.

Counsel for Kazmi, advocate Khosa, forwarding arguments in this matter, said that his client is a religious scholar, and he was wrongly implicated in this case. There were also some mistakes on the part of Saudi government that it admitted and paid compensations to the Haj pilgrims.

Khosa further said that appointment of the DG Haj was **t a jurisdiction of his client, and it was instead an authority that was with the prime minister. Similarly, my client was also **t responsible for hiring buildings in Saudi Arabia. He argued before the IHC that Special Judge Central (SJC) did **t hear the version of his client. He requested the court to hear the complete version of his client and set aside the SJC decision.

In his criminal appeal against the SJC’s decision dated June 3, 2016, Kazmi, through his counsel, has cited state as respondent. The petitioner adopted in his appeal that **ne of the prosecution witnesses have insinuated him with any malfeasance and his conviction is based on fanciful, arbitrary, capricious and absolutely conjectural hypothesis.
