Karachi

In the wake of the upcoming monsoon rains, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has established a rain emergency centre on the directives of its director general **or Muhammad, according to a statement issued on Friday.

The residents of those buildings which were declared dangerous by the SBCA technical committee have been advised to evacuate the buildings.

According to a SBCA survey, as many as 308 buildings in the metropolis have been declared dangerous and unsafe due to their dilapidated conditions.

The SBCA has declared an emergency in the department before the upcoming monsoon season, the statement further read.

The staff of authority would remain on duty for the 24 hours in three shifts, while the citizens can contact on 021-99232354 in case of any emergency, the statement added.

Earlier in **vember last year, the then city commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui had directed the SBCA to launch a campaign against dangerous buildings where people were still residing and take steps to demolish them. He had issued these orders while presiding over a meeting in about the dangerous buildings in Karachi.

During the meeting, he assured the SBCA that full support of the law-enforcement agencies would be provided to the SBCA when it would launch its drive against dangerous buildings.

Siddiqui also directed that vacant buildings be taken into the government’s custody.

Speaking on the occasion, officials of the SBCA asked for the support of the law-enforcement personnel to launch the campaign on a priority basis against the then 301 dangerous buildings in the city. The commissioner responded that the top priority of the government was to ensure the safety of citizens and the government would ensure evacuation of residents from the dangerous buildings.

The commissioner also ordered the deputy commissioner of the South district to conduct a survey of dangerous buildings in his district and submit a report to him within three days.

Replying to a question about why the dangerous buildings haven’t been vacated, the deputy commissioner said residents had obtained stay order from the court and then the administration could **t take any further step.
