افتراضي Zardari speaks out against KP govt's grant to Darul Uloom Haqqania

ISLAMABAD: In a statement released on Sunday, PPP co-chairman and former President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari conveyed his disappointment over KP government's recent grant of Rs 300 million to Dar Ul Uloom Haqqani.

"This is **thing but legitimization of militancy and militant Taliban that will undermine the nation's resolve to fight militants to the finish," said Zardari in a statement that was released on Sunday.

The statement from Zardari also stated that the amount should have been spent on human development instead of on ' a seminary whose claim to fame lies in its promotion of militant Islam and the world view of Islamic militants', read the statement.

"That it should have happened around the time when a group of the militant Taliban reportedly claimed responsibility for the target-killing of Sabri Qawwal in Karachi makes it all the more poignant," the statement further quoted Zardari as saying.

Zardari also said that the head of the Darul Uloom Haqqania in **wshera was an undeclared spokesperson of the Taliban.

"During the government-TTP talks in 2014, the Taliban actually named the head of the seminary to negotiate on their behalf. It is also widely k**wn that a number of militant Taliban leaders have been students of this seminary," read the statement.

The Dar Ul Uloom Haqqania has denied allegations that any of its students have been involved in acts of militancy or terrorism. A spokesperson laid the blame of maligning the institution on anti-Islam lobbies.

A couple of weeks ago, the KP government had come under fire over the decision to grant Rs 300 million to Darul Uloom Haqqania, a seminary which is often blamed for producing militants and hardliners. The KP government had clarified in a statement that the move was intended to bring around 3 million children in Pakistan who were associated with the madressa system.
