افتراضي PTI files reference with ECP to disqualify PM

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday filed a disqualification reference against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for concealing assets and disclosing incorrect details.

In this connection, Dr Yasmeen Rashid, who contested the 2013 general election against the prime minister from NA-120, Lahore, on a PTI ticket, filed the reference against the the PM with the ECP secretary.

“We have e**ugh evidence to disqualify the prime minister,” Dr Yasmeen said while speaking to media persons outside the ECP’s Secretariat here.

“PTI has been left with only one option i.e. to take the matter of Panama Papers to court as any development on Terms of reference (ToRs) could **tany development on Terms of reference (ToRs) could **t be made,” said PTI Spokesperson Naeemul Haq.

Haq demanded that members of the top electoral body should be appointed at the earliest so that pending cases could be settled without further delay.

The reference consisting of 72 pages says that PM Nawaz Sharif during the general elections of 2013 submitted incorrect affidavit about his assets as other assets had **t been disclosed before ECP. It is therefore prayed that ECP should disqualify the membership of PM of the National Assembly on disclosing incorrect assets.

Hopefully the ECP would dispose of all the pending petitions, he said and added that Terms of reference (ToRs) had failed owing to government team and it seemed that all important decisions would be taken on roads before Eid.

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Imran Khan charged that Maryam Nawaz was a princess and hence there was ** room for her in democracy and if monarchy made its way into Pakistan, she might have some post in such a setup.

Imran **ted while Maryam was dependent on Nawaz Sharif her flats abroad were concealed in his (Nawaz) **mination papers filed in the ECP ahead of election and that was e**ugh evidence for the disqualification of the prime minister.

“The ECP is already hearing a case filed by a PTI activist against Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law MNA Muhammad Safdar for allegedly concealing asset details,” he said.

Talking to media at his residence in Banigala, Imran said the petition filed against the prime minister by his party in the ECP was a legal position that democracies followed.

However, despite having filed the reference for PM’s disqualification, the PTI chief cast doubts about the credibility of the electoral body, saying, “This Election Commission is N-League’s election commission”.

“The judicial commission has given 40 findings regarding rigging in 2013 general elections but ** action has been taken so far by the ECP,” he said. Imran Khan was flanked by PTI Information Secretary Naeemul Haq, Dr Yasmeen Rashid and others. He said that the commission had looked into allegation of rigging, raised by PTI.

Imran vehemently rejected the government’s claim that his party was trying to destabilise democracy in the name of probe into Panama papers. “We are rather strengthening it,” he claimed.

“Democracy began with magna carta in the UK when industrialists demanded to bring the king under the rule of law. And in Pakistan we are also trying to bring King Nawaz Sharif under the law,” he explained.

Imran warned his party would go to the Supreme Court in case the ECP refused to hear the reference and would eventually go for street protests for which PTI was being reorganised. On the issue of PanamLeaks, PTI chairman said that the opposition parties stood united and said it was a one-point agenda and all parties were united on anti-corruption agenda that accountability should begin from Nawaz Sharif.

He contended that the entire opposition was one on the ToRs but insisted the government would never agree to these, it would trap the prime minister ultimately. Replying to questions, Imran defended PTI-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s allocation of Rs300 million for Madrassa Haqqania of Maulana Samiul Haq and said that if the cleric had agreed to reforms in seminaries, why this hue and cry was being raised.

He pointed out if a terrorist had walked out of these seminaries, seminary reforms were even much necessary to rid them of the menace. He **ted against 0.8 million children going to English medium schools, some 2.2 million were studying in seminaries and these needed to be reformed.

PTI wondered if the universities were closed down when some students were found involved in militancy. Imran said that the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had been advised to hold a media briefing on seminary reforms programme. “For the establishment of peace, reforms are imperative,” he emphasised.

About the resignation of British Prime Minister David Cameron, he said there was ** need for his resignation on the Britain’s decision to part ways with the European Union, but in his bowing out, there was victory for the democratic system there.
