ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz informed the Senate on Tuesday that Pakistan was **t oblivious to its defence needs and was upgrading its capabilities through suitable tech**logies without entering into an arms race.
The adviser asserted, “Our efforts for peace and friendship must **t be interpreted as our weakness. We are fully capable of defending our people and territory.” He assured the House that Pakistan would take all possible measures to augment its defence capability. He said this while winding up a discussion in the Upper House on an adjournment motion moved by the PML-N Senator Javed Abbasi over the recent test of India’s supersonic interceptor missile. The adviser said that Pakistani scientists and experts constantly monitored and evaluated the strategic threats that Indian nuclear doctrine posed to Pakistan's security. “Despite limited resources, Pakistan had developed a robust nuclear deterrent system whose safety and security was ack**wledged (by the world),” he said. On the diplomatic front, Sartaj Aziz said Pakistan was planning to highlight the dangerous implications of India's plan to nuclearise the Indian Ocean at all the relevant international fora. He said one specific proposal under consideration was to move resolution in the next session of the UN General Assembly to declare the Indian Ocean nuclear free zone. The adviser said Pakistan would approach other countries as well to co-sponsor this resolution. This, he said, would be an important initiative. As regards the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership of India, the adviser said Pakistan had undertaken a proactive diplomatic offensive in all the member countries of the group. “Our efforts towards **n-discriminatory approach will pay off,” he said. Sartaj said Pakistan's lobbying in the United States was quite active. “We have shortlisted lobbying firms. Our missions are also very active to protect the country's interests,” he claimed. Earlier, speaking on his adjournment motion, Abbasi said India had conducted a test of interceptor missile on May 15, 2016, which would start arms race in South Asia. Pakistan, he recalled, had to conduct nuclear tests in 1998 after India conducted the tests. Abbasi **ted that Pakistan did **t want to enter into arms race because it would disturb balance of power in the region. The PML-Q Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed said that it was an important issue as India was trying to become a member of the NSG. “There was a dire need to redefine the national security paradigm and focus on a robust foreign home-grown policy,” he stressed and **ted that there was need to plan a strategy with regards to increasing US-India military alliance. He wanted Pakistan to actively pursue Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline and TAPI project and questioned why our diplomacy failed in developing closer cooperation with Iran and Afghanistan, who had signed agreements with India. Senator Farhatullah Babar of the PPP said it was a need of hour to revisit the security policy. He added that on foreign policy and national security, the civilian side should have its due role. General (R) Salahuddin Trimizi of the PML-N, while refuting an impression that Pakistan had entered in arms race, said Pakistan was the first to offer India to declare the region nuclear free, besides signing the **n-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). However, India always sabotaged such efforts, he added. “We should define our aim and set our national goals. India's entire diplomacy and defence capability revolved around Pakistan,” the senator said. The PPP’s Abdul Rehman Rehman Malik said the United States was **t recognising the sacrifices rendered by Pakistan in the war against terror as it always demanded to “do more” and **w it was its turn to do more. He pointed out that Indian PM Narendra Modi visited Pakistan but then silently developed relations with Iran and Afghanistan to undermine China-Pakistan Eco**mic Corridor (CPEC). أكثر... ??????? ??????: Pakistan upgrading defence capabilities: Sartaj || ??????: ahlam1399 || ??????: اسم منتداك
