Mufti Popalzai an**unces Ramazan to commence today

Peshawar cleric goes with Ruet-e-Hilal body this time

PESHAWAR: Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai, the chief cleric of the historic Masjid Qasim Ali Khan, on Monday an**unced that Ramazan would commence today (Tuesday).

He was talking at the mosque to the media, which was keen to get his comments as to how and why his u**fficial moon-sighting committee had this time gone with the decision of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee appointed by the government.

However, he complained that the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee did **t wait for him before an**uncing the moon-sighting despite an earlier commitment made with him.

Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai said the committee, headed by him, received 200 witnesses who had sighted the moon. He said he didn't make any an**uncement of moon-sighting and instead passed on this information to the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. "But the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee had already an**unced moon-sighting without waiting for the Masjid Qasim Ali Khan Committee’s evidence collected from the witnesses," he complained.

Two members of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee were also present on the occasion when Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai talked to the members of media. The official regional Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, on the other hand, held its own meeting at the Gover**r's House, Peshawar. The media was **t allowed to cover its proceedings.

It is for the first time in years that Ramazan is being observed across the country on the same day. Earlier, Ramazan often began in most of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) a day before rest of Pakistan. This was largely due to the influence of the Masjid Qasim Ali Khan and its prayer leader Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai.

Meanwhile, there were reports that Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai was pressured **t to convene a meeting of his u**fficial moon-sighting committee on Sunday.

He had earlier declared in the presence of Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Mohammad Yousaf in a recent meeting that he would hold his committee's meeting on Sunday at any cost and an**unce the first Ramazan on Monday if they received credible witnesses. However, ** meeting was held on that day and it created doubts in the minds of the people.
