Who was Mullah Akhtar Mansour?
Two days ago, reports started emerging that Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour had been killed in a drone strike at Taftan, Balochistan. Apparently, the Emir of the Taliban had been entering Pakistan and was taken out by an American drone strike authorized by **ne other than US President Barack Obama.
Mullah Akhtar Mansour rose to prominence when he took over as the new chief of the Taliban. What has been k**wn about the man is this; he was close to Mullah Muhammad Omar, the one-eyed cleric who founded and led the Taliban into power during the 1990s in Afghanistan. Mullah Mansoor had been part of the Taliban movement right from the start. When it emerged in June 2015 that Mullah Omar had been dead for two years, Mullah Akhtar Mansour rose to the rank of the leader of the Taliban. However, inner dissensions were rife in the banned outfit, who did **t favour him as their new leader. However, Mullah Akhtar Mansour was able to outmatch his opponents and finally became the chief of the Taliban. He was born in Afghanistan's province of Kandahar and joined Mullah Omar when he initiated the Taliban movement. According to the United Nations, he was an active drug trafficker as well. After the Taliban seized power in 1996, he served as the civil aviation minister until 2001, when an American invasion ensured the fall of the Taliban government in Afghanistan. At first, he showed interest in negotiating with the government for peace but after becoming the head of the Taliban, Mullah Mansour chose to ig**re the repeatedly refused to come to the negotiating table for talks. أكثر...
