افتراضي Govt gets Rs65 bn from power consumers by imposing surcharges, says Nepra

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) in its State of the Industry Report for 2015 has disclosed that the government got Rs65 billion from electricity consumers by imposing various surcharges on electricity bills.

The annual report that Nepra has submitted to the Council of Common Interests (CCI), available with The News, says the claim of the government that the power deficit stands at 3,000MW is **t right rather it hovers around 7,000MW arguing that the evacuation system of electricity is **t strong e**ugh to carry the load and provide the electricity to the end consumers.

The report first vetted by the Ministry of Water and power to avoid any controversy which erupted in the last year. As compared to last year, the demand for electricity has increased by 2,000MW to 23,700MW.

The report also mentions the fact that the transmission system for carrying the electricity is so weak and the electricity is **t being generated by the power houses which can produce the cheap electricity. The transformers that can run on just 60 percent of their capacity are exposed to 80 percent capacity because the system is sustaining a mammoth loss. On top of that, electric power distribution companies (Discos) have failed to achieve their targets of reducing their losses. It says that the existing transmission and distribution system is **t strong e**ugh to carry the load of electricity mentioning the fact that the emphasis of the government is on increasing the generation of electricity supply **t on the strengthening of the transmission system.

Nepra also indicated in the report that private power producers (IPPs) improved their output in terms of electricity generation but public sector generation companies (Gencos) had **t improved at all.

The report also reveals that the government has, instead of decreasing the electricity tariff, increased it by imposing various surcharges amounting to Rs65 billion.

Nepra also showed its displeasure in the report about the dismal output of K-Electric as the entity has failed in generating the required electricity under the agreement.
