افتراضي Khursheed, Imran try to regain lost ground

After losing an opportunity to engage the prime minister in the National Assembly this Monday due to faulty planning, execution slip-up or conspiracy if any, PTI Chief Imran Khan and Opposition Leader Khursheed Shah tried their bit to make up lost ground on Wednesday.

Both used the best of oratory, political rhetoric etc at their disposal. Khan thundered as usual in an effort to belittle and reprimand the PML-N governance model, Shah played both sides as usual.

But Monday’s jumbled up performance seemed hard to cover up after a lapse of almost two days. Till date, we haven’t heard any logical explanation from PPP or PTI as to what had happened. Something had gone wrong between PPP and PTI that day, or Sheikh Rashid and Ch Pervaiz Elahi were in a hurry to boycott. Khursheed Shah claims having been advised strictly by PTI legislator Dr Shireen Mazari to wind up his speech within two minutes immediately after the premier’s. And that the walkout was PTI’s brainchild. Imran tells a senior media person he was “taken aback” by the hasty boycott by Mr Shah. Sheikh Rashid remains mysteriously tight-lipped about the whole situation. He didn’t turn up in the Assembly to witness Imran’s speech on Wednesday.

It was a different day, altogether. Everyone on the treasury and opposition benches knew steam had actually been taken out of the whole thing as a government-opposition Parliamentary Committee on ToRs for Panama Papers judicial investigation was just a matter of hours. By the evening, it got materialised. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq acted as facilitator, Premier Nawaz Sharif gave the final **d. ** more PanamaLeaks related walkouts for **w as almost all the main players of the political chess board have spoken their minds.

That day, despite oral commitments that the premier was bound to listen to Khan and Shah’s speeches, and won’t walk away after delivering his own, the opposite happened. PM sat patiently as he saw opposition walk away. As a result, the two leading opposition figures could **t respond to Premier Sharif’s speech, **r engage him in questions and counters. Everyone on the opposition benches seemed under the confrontational spell – generated from within or imposed by unseen forces. On this day, when opposition leaders were in a mood to speak, the premier was **t there to witness it directly. And Shah could **t hold himself from telling the legislators that how dearly he wished the premier was there as he spoke. But that was **t to be. So, they had to be content with Minister Khawaja Asif’s blunt reply whereby he strongly criticised PTI chief’s style of politics. In a nutshell, he demanded inquiry and audit into PTI fund raisers overseas and money trail back home, as well as Imran’s cancer hospital’s overseas investments. Asif criticised what he termed double standards of PTI chief in defining offshore companies he owned, and that owned by premier’s children. “Offshore is offshore…whether it is in Panama or New Jersey,” Asif taunted while pointing fingers towards the PTI benches. Imran was **t there to listen to and reply as he had left to address a public meeting in Muzaffarabad. PTI’s young lot of television talk show stars – Ali Mohammad, Murad Saeed – however tried to get even with the minister on this count. Aided by Dr Shireen Mazari, they landed besides her on the front rows as soon as Imran Khan had left the Hall. But, they couldn’t provoke an experienced Khawaja Asif, who at times termed the duo “naughty lads”. Seemingly an**yed by a low key snub from Khawaja Asif, Mazari also left for lobby during the first part of Asif’s speech. Ali-Murad duo also excited within minutes as Khursheed Shah advised them **t to become irritants.

Imran’s address earlier was also **t hassle free. Some PML-N backbenchers, especially womenfolk, kept on taunting him despite repeated snubs from the speaker. Minister Abid Sher Ali too could **t resist the euphoria. As he tried to interject Imran’s speech, sitting nearby, Railways Minister Saad Rafiq, almost snubbed his junior colleague to save the situation.

Khan however wrapped up his speech in an hour’s time, Shah was relatively brief. As expected, Khan warned of looming street agitation if Premier Nawaz Sharif didn’t come up clean on Panama Papers (through judicial commission). He was furious over allegations being hurled towards him and his lifestyle, and challenged the government to take him to task. Shah focused more on resolving this political crisis through Parliament, and **t through street agitation. This difference in respective PTI and PPP approaches was e**ugh to indicate their near future plans. Former interior minister Rehman Malik tried to hijack PPP’s Panama Papers strategy after meeting elder Zardari in London. He indicated an imminent PPP U-turn to **rmalise fractured relations with the PML-N. The whole effort was however swiftly disowned by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari who still favours maintaining pressure on the PML-N for more days and weeks to come. But situation on the ground is changing fast. One could sense this by the overall atmosphere and a relieved body language of ministers, and even treasury back benchers. Opposition benches beamed the same sentiments.

Within minutes of the two speeches in the early after**on on Wednesday, one could see ministers Ishaq Dar and Zahid Hamid approaching Khursheed Shah’s chair. Shah Mahmood Quershi, Aftab Sherpao joined in quickly.

They exchanged laughter, *****ed jokes and every one seemed relieved to have passed through the unlimited blame game, agitation and walk out phe**me**n revolving around Panama Papers. Next phase consists of tough negotiations and give and take to arrive at consensus ToRs for judicial investigation. So a hassle free address by President Mam**on Hussain, and smooth budget session this June, in all likelihood. Premier’s all purpose number two, Senator Ishaq Dar, will be a relieved man on many counts…
