Parliamentary committee to have six members from govt, six from opposition; formation of the committee to be approved by NA today; ToRs on PanamaLeaks probe to be finalised within two weeks
ISLAMABAD: The government and the opposition on Wednesday agreed to form a 12-member parliamentary committee comprising an equal number of members from both sides to finalise the terms of reference (ToRs) for the judicial commission to probe the allegations of offshore companies, money laundering, loan waivers and kickbacks against politicians in two weeks’ time. According to the agreement reached between the government and opposition in a meeting at the speaker’s chamber that was presided over by Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the parliamentary committee will comprise six members each from both side of the aisle and a resolution for the formation of the committee will be presented in the National Assembly today (Thursday). However, a consensus on the chairman for the committee could **t be reached as the opposition wanted that the chairman should be from the opposition side while the government team wanted its own chairman. It was decided to settle the issue of chairmanship later on after the approval of the committee’s resolution by the National Assembly. “The committee will be given two weeks time to finalise the ToRs for the judicial commission to probe the PanamaLeaks,” said Information Minister Senator Pervaiz Rashid while talking to media persons after the meeting of the government and the opposition. Following the meeting, the opposition held its separate meeting to finalise the names for the parliamentary committee and sent the names of Opposition Leader in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan, deputy parliamentary leader of PTI in the National Assembly Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Ilyas Bilour of the ANP, Sahibzada Tariqullah of the Jamaat-e-Islami, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao of the QWP and Tariq Bashir Cheema of the PML-Q. Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah justified the **n-inclusion of the MQM in the committee, arguing that they had parted ways with the opposition on the PanamaLeaks probe issue. While talking to media persons, Pervaiz Rashid said the members can be from both the National Assembly and the Senate. The minister said the recommendation to form the committee was given by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to the National Assembly speaker. He said approval to form the committee will be sought from the House. Earlier, the meeting chaired by Ayaz Sadiq was attended by Pervaiz Rashid, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif from the government side while Khursheed Shah, Aitzaz Ahsan, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Sahibzada Tariqullah, Sardar Israrullah Zehri, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and Ghulam Ahmed Bilour attended the meeting from the opposition’s side. According to sources, the MQM leaders met the speaker and demanded to include its **minee in the committee.Talking in Geo programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said the MQM was an important party and it was **t appropriate to keep it away from the committee on ToRs.
