افتراضي Give up Pak passports if you don?t pay taxes, Khursheed tells PM?s children

Imran says he does **t k**w about other opposition parties but PTI will come out on streets if justice **t done on PanamaLeaks issue

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said on Wednesday the questions being raised about Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif were because of his own family and suggested that the premier’s children should abandon their Pakistani passports if they did **t want to pay taxes.

“The prime minister should have asked his children to come forward and explain,” the opposition leader said while speaking in the National Assembly on Wednesday after ending a boycott of the opposition after the prime minister’s speech in the Lower House of parliament.

Khursheed said the dust over the Panama issue will **t settle and this was just the beginning. “If you are **t going to declare your assets according to the Constitution, then there will be an issue,” he said. The opposition leader said the opposition had formulated a questionnaire to help in resolving the issue and **t complicate it and the government had to understand that parliament could solve issues that sit-ins and protests could **t. “Where did the money came from to buy the flats? This question remains unanswered,” he said.

Khursheed said the opposition had a lot of reservations over Nawaz Sharif’s speech that he delivered in the National Assembly as he did **t answer the key questions of the opposition. He said the prime minister’s family was never included in the 22 richest families. “If Ittefaq Foundries were all the money came and that we got to k**w about Gulf Steel only after the premier mentioned it,” he added.

The opposition leader said whether the Sharif family got permission from the State Bank of Pakistan for establishing the steel mill in Gulf. He said Quaid-i-Azam paid Rs4,400 in taxes in 1948, whereas Nawaz Sharif’s recorded paid taxes stand at Rs2,700 in 1993. “The prime minister himself said that in 1994 he paid Rs4,000 in taxes and **ne in 1995,” he added.

Khursheed said the government started to criticise the opposition when it asked seven questions. “We were only seeking clarifications from them as we were **t asking from where they got the money but only asking how they send the money from Pakistan,” he said. He said if the sons of the prime minister are doing their business outside Pakistan then they should have also the nationality of Europe as ** one like that his son will have their business outside Pakistan just only to avoid taxes. “If someone is doing his business outside Pakistan then why he keeps Pakistan’s nationality,” he questioned.

He said the opposition had listened to the prime minister’s explanations very carefully and it did **t walk out over his instructions but over prime minister’s avoidance of addressing the real issue. He said Nawaz Sharif paid around Rs0.6 million income tax in as many as 14 years.

Khursheed said the government gave confusing and contradictory statements over offshore companies of the premier’s sons. The opposition leader said all the problems can be resolved in the Parliament because it is an elected forum of 200 million people. He said they want to improve the democratic system, strengthen the Parliament and the institutions. He said there should be across the board accountability of all including those who got their loans written off.

The PTI chief Imran Khan said on Wednesday that he can**t tell about other opposition parties, but the PTI will surely come on roads if justice was **t done on the issue of PanamaLeaks probe.

Addressing the National Assembly session, the PTI chief threatened the government that his party would take to streets to seek justice if Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif does **t present himself for fair accountability, adding, “Lame excuses and telling stories will **t serve the purpose **w.”

He termed the PM’s speech as disappointing, saying that the premier distorted facts and did **t speak the truth. “Had he delivered such a speech in Parliament of any European country, he would have been compelled to resign,” Imran said.

The PTI chairman called for immediate formation of committee to probe PanamaLeaks, saying the accountability should start from the prime minister. “The country will **t progress until accountability starts from the PM,” he maintained.

Imran offered himself and all the accounts of cancer hospital for scrutiny. “My name has never been in PanamaLeaks and the same can also be verified through Google search,” he said. The PTI chairman accused the prime minister of launching personal attacks on him. He also accused the government of trying to bring the Shaukat Khanam Hospital into disrepute, thus damaging **ble cause of the charity hospital.

In the hard-hitting speech, Imran asked the PM that he can easily probe his wrongs through the NAB and FIA and it does **t become of a PM to level allegations on opposition leaders. He pointed out that Mariam Nawaz had shown herself as dependent of Nawaz Sharif while first flat in her name in London was purchased in June, 1993. He said that four other flats in London were purchased in July, 1995, two flats in July, 1996 while fifth flat was purchased in January, 2004. “Nawaz did **t speak truth on floor of the House that the flats were purchased during the year 2005,” he said, adding that to tell lies in the Parliament is a big crime. He said that two off-shore companies were in name of Mariam Nawaz who was dependent of Nawaz Sharif.

Imran said during 1970s and early 1980s, he played lot of cricket for different English counties and also participated in Kerry Packer’s cricket ****** and earned huge money with which he purchased a flat in 1983 through an offshore company. “I never transferred a single rupee abroad from Pakistan but brought money to Pakistan after selling my flat,” he said, maintaining that what he owned was in his own name and in Pakistan and in the name of his sons.

Imran went on to say that he remained captain of Pakistan cricket team for 10 years and there was ** case of corruption against him. He revealed that once he invited Nawaz Sharif to his London flat that was a penthouse. Taking a dig at Nawaz Sharif, he said that he seemed to be unaware of a penthouse as he had asked as to whether it can be blown away by heavy wind.

He said he along with other Pakistan cricket team members were given plots when they won 1987 Test ****** in India and 1992 World Cup and he donated both the plots in his name to the Shaukat Khanam hospital. “Had I any desire to make money, I might have established sugar mill or foundry instead of making a hospital,” he said.

He said Pakistan is the only country which was founded in the name of Islam and efforts should be made to follow model of Madina Al Munawwara. “We started our journey from Medina which is the herald of democracy but started moving towards monarchy,” Imran said.
