ISLAMABAD: The government team gained a major first win against the Opposition on Wednesday when the latter agreed to the former’s terms of reference to the extent of probing cases beyond the offshore companies mentioned in the Panama Papers.
The government-opposition meeting held in the Speaker National Assembly’s chamber on Wednesday decided **t only to probe offshore companies beyond the Panama Papers but also decided to inquire into the foreign wealth of Pakistanis, looted money of kickbacks as well as the cases of bank loan write off. Following this understanding between the two sides besides the offshore companies of those named in the Panama Papers, the likes of Imran Khan and Jehangir Tareen would also be answerable. The proposed ToRs could also hold others including Asif Ali Zardari and General (R) Pervez Musharraf accountable in terms of their undeclared or even declared offshore wealth and properties. Sources said that after heated discussion on the broader parameters of the proposed ToRs, the government team succeeded in getting the Opposition convinced to get the matters probed beyond Panama Papers. The joint Opposition in its ToRs, an**unced a few weeks back, had focused on the Panama Papers and did **t have any room for even inquiring into offshore companies which are beyond the scope of the Panama Papers. In the meeting the Opposition has agreed to the proposed point which is almost the same as was reflected in the government’s ToRs. The parameters of the proposed ToRs will be an**unced in the national assembly on Thursday. The government’s ToRs had proposed the Judicial Commission the following areas for probe: “(a) Involvement of Pakistani citizens, persons of Pakistani origin and legal entities in offshore companies in Panama or in any other country; and (b) Involvement of former and present holders of public ****** in (i) writing off their own bank loans or those of their immediate family members through political influence; and (ii) transfer from Pakistan of funds which have originated from corruption, commissions or kickbacks.” With a slight change of wording, the above ToRs have been agreed by the government and the Opposition during Wednesday’s meeting. Interestingly the Supreme Court while returning the government’s request for the setting up of the Judicial Commission did **t reject the proposed ToRs but only asked to come up with specific cases falling in the categories mentioned in the ToRs. The Supreme Court had shown its willingness to consider setting up of Judicial Commission to probe issues of offshore companies and foreign wealth even beyond PanamaLeaks scope as well as bank loan default/waive off cases provided (i) the commission is given specific cases, and (ii) empowered. The apex court letter while referring to the paragraph **. 1(a) and (b) of the government ToRs had set the condition of listing the names and other relevant particulars of individuals, families, groups etc who need to be probed for their foreign wealth/offshore companies and loan default/waive off. The Supreme Court’s letter clearly directed, “Before forming any opinion as to the formation of requisite Commission of inquiry or otherwise, it is necessary to have the list of all individuals, families, groups, companies, etc. with their total number, alongwith some relevant particulars, against whom purported inquiry proceedings are to be held under paragraph **. 1(a) & (b) of the terms of reference.” أكثر... ??????? ??????: Opposition agrees to probe beyond Panama Papers || ??????: ahlam1399 || ??????: اسم منتداك
