Cop killed, 19 injured as two blasts rock Peshawar
PESHAWAR: A policeman was killed and 19 other persons sustained injuries in twin blasts in Aslam Dheri on the Pajaggi Road here on Wednesday. An anti-polio campaign being carried out in the area was immediately halted after the explosions.
Initially, two policemen were wounded when a bomb targeted a police party in the limits of the Mathra Police Station.As heavy contingents of the police as well as rescue workers and media teams arrived on the spot and started doing their work, a**ther bomb went off. According to the officials at the Lady Reading Hospital, a policeman identified as Iftikhar was killed in the blast. Those injured in the two blasts totalled 19.The injured included 13 policemen, the driver of a private TV channel, Shahzad, and three civilians. A number of vehicles, including those in the use of the bomb disposal unit and media outlets, were also damaged in the second blast as these were parked nearby.“The target of the two bombs was the police. As the cops arrived at the site of the first blast, a**ther improvised explosive device went off, injuring more people,” Capital City Police ******r Mubarak Zeb told The News. The policemen injured were identified as Asim Akbar, Basit Pervez, Fazal Ghani, Gohar Khan, Guldad, Gulsher, Ibrahim, Hidayatullah, Imran Ali, Inamul Haq, Jehangir Khan and Sabir Khan.The civilians who were wounded in the two explosions included Sher Afzal, Aurangzeb, Irfanullah, Sardar Ali, Shahzad and Asad Zia. Asad Zia is a union council communication support ******r working with the polio programme in the Union Council Pajaggi. He was supervising the polio vaccinators in the vicinity when he was caught in the second blast. A video made on a cellular phone later went viral showing how policemen were collecting evidence from the spot and media personnel were covering the incident when the second bomb went off. People were seen running to take cover. On a number of occasions in the past, the police and bomb disposal units feared that a second blast could take place to trap the cops, rescue workers and journalists. This happened on Wednesday and caused harm. However, it has been observed that most people don’t take any precaution in such situations. The funeral prayer of the deceased police constable Iftikhar was offered at the Malik Saad Shaheed Police Lines.Capital City Police ******r Mubarak Zeb, Commissioner Peshawar Fakhr-e-Alam, SSP Operations Abbas Majeed Marwat and a number of senior police and army ******rs attended the funeral. Inspector General of Police Nasir Khan Durrani along with CCPO visited the Lady Reading Hospital to inquire after the wounded policemen and civilians. The IGP told reporters that the police were the target of the bomb explosions as they along with the army and other forces had played a key role in restoration of peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Meanwhile, President Mam**on Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Gover**r Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak condemned the blasts and expressed sorrow over the loss of precious lives. They termed the bomb blasts a cowardly act of terror. They said terrorist attacks could **t dampen the resolve of the nation to stamp out terrorism. They said those who played with in**cent lives deserved ** leniency and would be brought to justice.
