افتراضي Dre Mahsud tribes chieftains*want compensation amount increased

PESHAWAR: Chieftains of Dre Mahsud tribes of South Waziristan have appealed to the government to increase the compensation amount for the damaged houses from Rs400,000 to Rs2 million and demanded action against the Fata Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) for its alleged failure in rehabilitation of the displaced tribespeople.

The elders of Dre Mahsud or three Mahsud tribes, Shamankhel, Bahlolzai and Alizai, held a gathering in Peshawar co-chaired by Malik Dost Mohammad Khan Mahsud and Shahzada Waziristan.

Mahsud tribal elders, including Javed Shabikhel, Anwar Mahsud, **or Khan Mahsud, Rahmat Khan Mahsud, Ayub Gul Mahsud, Abdullah Khan Mahsud, Malik Ahmad Shah Mahsud, Karim Mahsud, Faisal Alam Mahsud and others attended the jirga.

Malik Dost Mahsud said the Mahsud tribespeople had suffered more losses than people of any other tribal region due to militancy and military operations.

He said the Mahsud tribespeople had been living away from their villages and towns since October 2009 after the government launched a massive military offensive against the militants in South Waziristan.

The elder said most of the infrastructure, including houses, shops and markets were destroyed due to military operation and rains and these needed to be rebuilt.

Malik Dost Mohammad said the government had an**unced compensation for damaged houses, which he termed insufficient for building a house in the far-flung areas of South Waziristan. The tribal elders unanimously demanded increase in compensation from Rs4 lakh for each destroyed house to Rs2 million.

The elders said that **n-governmental organisations working in South Waziristan should be brought under the committees of elders so that they could effectively utilise funds for welfare of the people instead of wasting money on unnecessary projects.

They urged the government and the National Database and Registration Authority to resolve the long standing issue of double addresses on the national identity cards of the displaced people.

The Mahsud tribal elders demanded registration of all the Mahsud tribespeople. They asked the federal government to probe how many people were provided assistance and compensation by the FDMA.

The elders called upon the government to make arrangements for employment of the returning people in native areas. They also demanded royalty on revenue of Gomal Zam Dam and the establishment of engineering university and medical college in South Waziristan.
