MQM worker was tortured, says postmortem report
KARACHI: The postmortem report of Aftab Ahmed, a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) who died on May 3, showed on Thursday he had been tortured.
However, the cause of death will be disclosed after the completion of histopathological and chemical examiner’s reports.Ahmed was arrested by the paramilitary force on May 1 from the Federal B Area over suspicion of his involvement in various crimes. A day later, he was produced before an anti-terrorism court, which endorsed his 90-day preventive detention. On Tuesday morning, Ahmed had complained of chest pain after which he was immediately taken to the Jinnah Hospital where he died during treatment.The postmortem examination was conducted by a medical board of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) that consisted of Additional Police Surgeon Dr Kaleem Shaikh, Dr Ejaz and Dr Sona Mal of the Jinnah Medical University. The postmortem was conducted in the presence of Judicial Magistrate South-VIII Kaleemullah Kalwar. According to the postmortem report, the death occurred at 8:20am in the emergency room of the JPMC on May 3. The inquiry report was prepared by the magistrate South with direction to conduct postmortem examination to ascertain the cause of death. The report says 35 to 40 percent of Ahmed’s body surface was found congested due to multiple bruises while multiple abrasions of variable sizes were found with superficial loss of skin at sides of chest, abdomen and thighs. “Multiple bruises found which are variable in sizes in different regions of the body. Redish and redish black in colour, some found overlapping each other,” says the report.The report underlined that Aftab Ahmed’s body also had multiple abrasions, with *****es of skin missing. His left foot’s big toe nail was displaced from its anatomical position. Deep congestion with swelling was also **ted around both of his ankle joints, it concluded. On Wednesday, the Chief of the Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif, took **tice of the death of Aftab Ahmed, Coordinator of senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Dr Farooq Sattar, and ordered an inquiry. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), General Raheel Sharif ordered an inquiry to find out the truth about the death of Ahmed, and also issued directives to ensure that justice was done. After getting instructions from the army chief, DG Sindh Rangers Maj-General Bilal Akbar formed a high-powered team to be supervised by senior officials to ascertain the facts.
