Efforts on to strengthen routine immunisation in KP: Minister

PESHAWAR: Stressing the need for vaccinating children against vaccine preventable ailments, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Minister Shahram Khan Tarakai has said they had decided to separate polio vaccinators from routine immunisation to strengthen regular coverage and save children from childhood diseases.

He was addressing a function organised by the Khyber Institute of Child Health and Children Hospital (KICH) to mark the World immunisation Week.

Shahram Tarakai said eradicating poliovirus from Pakistan and particularly Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata was their top priority but said it had affected their routine immunisation, saying the campaigns are conducted on regular basis and keep Lady Health Workers (LHWs) and other health workers busy.

“If we strengthen routine immunisation at the basic health units, it will lessen burden on tertiary hospitals,” the Minister said.He suggested the involvement of elected public representatives in the vaccination process to help reach out to the children in their respective union councils.

About the low immunisation coverage that dropped from 78 per cent to 40 per cent due to a host of reasons, Shahram Tarakai said they would utilise all available resources to strengthen vaccination and ensure each and every child got vaccinated against preventable diseases.Dr Gohar Rehman stressed the need for building up routine immunisation to save children from serious preventable diseases.
