Ayyan Ali files contempt of court application

KARACHI: Fashion model Ayyan Ali on Tuesday filed a contempt of court application in the Sindh High court against the ministry of interior for placing her name on the Exit Control List again despite the orders of the superior courts to delete her name from the ECL.

The SHC on March 7 had struck down a memorandum of the ministry of interior regarding restricting the fashion model from travelling abroad and allowed her to travel abroad. The Supreme court had also upheld the SHC order on April 13 on a state appeal against the High court order.

Ayyan Ali, **w on bail, was facing US$500,000 smuggling trial before the customs court at Rawalpindi. She was arrested by the customs authorities at the Islamabad airport on March 14 last year, and US$506,800 were recovered from her luggage. According to the prosecution, Ayyan had tried to smuggle an undeclared US$506,800 from Pakistan to Dubai.

The petitioner’s counsel submitted in the application that despite superior courts orders, her name was again placed on the ECL which was a violation of the court orders. He submitted that the respondents obstructed and violated the superior court orders that set aside the placement of the petitioner’s name on the ECL and committed contempt of court. The court was prayed to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the responsible officials for disobeying the court orders and order removal of the name of the petitioner from the ECL in execution and implementation of court orders of March 7 that was confirmed by the Supreme court on April 13. The application will be heard on Wednesday.
