Beijing will raise the threshold for issuing 'red alerts' for smog
   Beijing's environmental protection bureau an**unced that the country will alter the criteria for issuing pollution alerts starting in March. This news comes after the Chinese capital issued two "red alert" warnings in December last year, followed by Tianjin and Hebei a week later At present, all three cities use differing criteria when issuing pollution alerts. The new criteria may lead to fewer red alerts issued in Beijing. According to China's state media agency Xinhua, Beijing and its neighbouring cities will have to follow a criteria that is categorised by Air Quality Index (AQI) readings. In the future, a red alert can only be issued when the daily average AQI is forecast to exceed 500 for a day, 300 for two days in a row or 200 for four days. Read more...
