Nicki Minaj and
Taylor Swift had a
Twitter exchange of epic proportions on Tuesday. It all started when
Nicki criticized the
MTV VMAs **minations , saying
her racy hit "Anaconda" should have been up for video of the year and best choreography.
If I was a different "kind" of artist, Anaconda would be **minated for best choreo and vid of the year as well.
— Nicki MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Nicki cited the video's popularity to prove her point, explaining how the video seemed to wield ubiquitous influence upon its release in August 2014.
Ellen did her own anaconda video and did the #choreo lol. Remember her doing that kick. Even mtv did a post on the choreo @MTV remember?
— Nicki MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
U couldn't go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween ...an impact like that & ** VOTY **mination?
— Nicki MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Then
Nicki compared her treatment to that of "other" girls.
When the "other" girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that **mination.
— Nicki MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Taylor, whose
"Blank Space" video broke the Vevo record "Anaconda" previously held , saw the tweet and replied.
@NICKIMINAJ I've Done **thing but Love & Support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
But
Nicki insisted that she "didn't say a word about" Taylor.
Huh? U must **t be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I Love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13
— Nicki MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Nicki tweeted at
Taylor again.
@taylorswift13 I'm still confused as to why u just tweeted me when I made it abundantly clear... pic.twitter.com/A5kJyi6fQC
— Nicki MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Nicki felt the need to clarify that she was **t taking jabs at Taylor.
**thing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That's what they want. https://t.co/AfcwoyDvpg
— Nicki MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Taylor didn't address Nicki's criticism of the media or explain why she tweeted at Nicki. Instead, she invited
Nicki to join her on stage if she wins.
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on.
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
Nicki retweeted a fan, suggesting that
Taylor was missing the point.
.@taylorswift13 stop using "support all girls" as an excuse to **t be critical of racist media that benefits and glorifies you
— berenice (@itsbereniced) July 21, 2015
Finally,
Nicki suggested a media bias has influenced **t just the VMA **minations, but also the
depiction of music service Tidal in the media .
I'm so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works. Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal & were dragged.
— Nicki MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
Along the way,
Kim Kardashian seemed to get involved. She tweeted a picture showing her lounging on the couch and pointing her finger. "Imma let you finish but . . . ," she wrote, clearly referencing that time
Kanye West interrupted Taylor when she beat Beyoncé at the 2009 VMAs.
But after Twitter users responded, Kim said she wasn't trying to get involved in
Nicki and Taylor's discussion.
I'm **t trying to shade anyone! That's **t my style! I just thought that caption was perfect for that pic! Changing the caption **w! #ironic
— Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) July 21, 2015
Instead, she opted for a caption mentioning
her new cover of Vogue Spain .
Caption this... #VogueSpain #Kim**Filter pic.twitter.com/72Dewa6trr
