The sharp-edged, low-slung Maserati Boomerang supercar embodies the style of the 1970s, with its squat stance, angular lines and side ******* that wrap around the car's contours and is expected to raise nearly £3 million at Bonhams Chantilly Sale on September 5. This signature concept prototype first appeared at the 1971 Turin show before making an appearance at the 1972 Geneva motor show – in fully operational form – with the addition of a potent 300bhp V8 motor and the ability to blast all the way to 300kph (186mph), making it suitably rapid for the early 1970s. Still in working order according to Bonhams and fully road registered, the Boomerang is based upon underpinnings from a Maserati Bora, but makes a much more striking purchase – albeit one reserved for the wealthiest of petrolheads. Philip Kantor, Bonhams European Head of Motoring, said: "The Boomerang was the first car of its time to create such a strong, angular style statement. It's considered by many to be one of the most remarkable designs of the 20th century and the 'grandfather' to the Volkswagen Golf Mk 1. "The Boomerang has been shown at many world-class events including exhibitions and concours d'élégance such as Villa d'Este and Pebble Beach, and is **w offered at Bonhams first ever sale in Chantilly."
