Mulan remake won?t feature this iconic scene from the animation for a very good reas

There are some scenes from certain Disney animations that are seared into avid fans’ brains.

When Simba nestles into the neck of his late father Mufasa; Aladdin – awkwardly grinning and offering his hand – asking Jasmine whether she trusts him, or when Cruella De Vil’s eyes turn red as she tries to capture a bunch of escaped Dalmatians, to name a few.

In Mulan, one of the most memorable moments is when the titular character vows in the middle of the night to take her ailing father’s place in the Chinese Army – and cuts her long dark hair into a short bob using a sword.

But fans shouldn’t expect to see her decision play out that way in the upcoming remake.

In a lengthy conversation with Collider, producer Jason Reed explained that Chinese warriors often “wore their hair long,” so they didn’t think it write for her to chop it off.

“For her to cut her hair off, it would make her look more like a woman than less like a woman in reality,” he told the publication. “Since we’re doing the live-action version, because we’re looking at the worldwide market, we thought we had to bring that level of cultural accuracy to it.”<strong/>

Other changes include missing characters, from Eddie Murphy’s wise-cracking, talkative dragon Mushu to war general Li Shang (voiced by BD Wong).

Speaking to CinemaBlend earlier this week, Reed stated that the latter was erased from the script in the wake of the #MeToo movement, as the team felt like Mulan falling in love with her superior would have been inappropriate.

“Having a commanding officer that is also the sexual love interest was very uncomfortable,” he said. “We thought that in a lot of ways that it was sort of justifying behaviour that we’re doing everything we can to get out of our industry.”

Mulan will be released in cinemas on March 27, 2020.
