افتراضي Alistair’s impression of 2012 ? Liverpool Echo

</p>After a period of self-imposed absence, Alistair McGowan tells Kate Whiting why blending impressions and sport was the key to his comeback

AFTER just 30 minutes, Iâ??ve managed to talk to not only the erudite master of impressions, but also new England manager Roy Hodgson, Hugh Grant, John McEnroe, Jedward, Peter Andre and Robbie Savage.

Itâ??s hard to believe itâ??s eight years since Alistair McGowan was almost ubiquitous, making audiences laugh with his Bafta-winning show The Big Impression.

But after trying his hand at drama in 2005â??s Bleak House, starring in and directing musicals and even writing a play, heâ??s returning to prime-time TV to do what, he admits, he does best.

You Cannot Be Serious! will see him front a topical sports comedy show featuring a mixture of clips, sketches and impressions.

â??The short answer is that out of all the things I do, itâ??s the thing Iâ??m best at,â?* he says in his own, rather refined voice.

With a huge summer of sport on the horizon, including Euro 2012, Wimbledon and, of course, the Olympics, Alistair is the first to acknowledge heâ??ll have his work cut out keeping on top of everything and making sure each show is fresh.

â??It will be tricky and Iâ??ve never done a topical show before. The Big impression was up to date, but always filmed in advance of transmission so we knew who to work on and who to prepare in every sense, with voices, sketches and wigs and noses. With this, we have to be prepared to fight fires all over the place.

â??And we have the added problem of recording and editing on a Thursday and Friday and going out on the Saturday. In sport things can change in a minute, so in a day there might be all sorts that might make us seem a little it out of date. Itâ??s a big ask.â?*

Plus, heâ??s no longer such a spring chicken. â??I feel like Iâ??m 47 when I have to get up and work out so I can look like Jessica Ennis in case we have to do her and then I do a dayâ??s writing and at the end of the day I think, God, this was a lot easier when I was 26!â?*

Besides acting, sport is Worcestershire-born Alistair â??s other great love and itâ??s a natural fit to combine the two.

â??Iâ??ve been very lucky because Iâ??ve been doing sporting comedy on and off for over 20 years now so Iâ??ve got to meet a lot of my sporting heroes from my childhood.â?*

Alistair is proud that he started â??doingâ?? new England manager Roy Hodgson â?? after his time at Liverpool but while he was still at West Brom.

â??Nobody was that bothered about the impression at all and now suddenly heâ??s become a lot more high profile,â?* he says, slipping into Hodgsonâ??s nasal tones, before regaling me with a story about former tennis champs Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski.

â??Years ago, when they were number one and two in tennis, they were quite fierce rivals really and if ever I did an event like the Davis Cup, which I did a couple of times, and see Tim, heâ??d grab me across to his coterie and go â??Do your impression of Gregâ?? so Iâ??d do the impression and theyâ??d all laugh.

â??Then Iâ??d walk down the corridor 10 metres and thereâ??d be Greg with his coterie outside his dressing room and heâ??d say, â??Hey Alistair, come here. Do Tim, do Timâ??. They loved each other being done.â?*

Winning a Bafta for his work in 2003 didnâ??t really change anything, he says.

â??It changed the make-up of my mantelpiece. I had to move the clock from the centre to make room for the Bafta. The only thing it changes is that whenever I watch the Baftas now and they go, â??Oh thatâ??s heavyâ??, I go, â??Yeah it isâ??. Because they are really heavy.

â??But I donâ??t think it makes any difference at all really. I suppose itâ??s great in terms of satisfaction but it didnâ??t mean I rested on my laurels or thought â??Tick, thatâ??s that doneâ??, but Iâ??d rather have it than not.â?*

And with that heâ??s off, presumably to brush up on his Jessica Ennis routine.

You Cannot Be Serious!, tonight, 7.30pm, ITV1
