So as a back story, over a year ago, I had an Exmoor Pony who was my world but unfortunately, we weren't compatible. After a couple of falls, I became increasingly nervous when riding her and just making the whole situation worse. She ended up moving on back to her breeder - which I was over the moon about because it was the best possible solution. Anyway I started looking for an older and more experienced pony/horse and fell in love with Alfie - my 14.1, 12 year old Connie x Appaloosa. He had a couple of green areas, but this wasn't a problem for me and things were going reasonably well. Anyway in October I got him all tacked up but when taking him into the school, Alfie spooked at a piece of farm equipment (don't ask me what it is, but it looks like a transformer). As he spooked, he bucked and kicked me in the chest and face. So my confidence quite literally took a rather huge knock. I have been just about able to sit on him and walk for ten minutes. In the meantime, paying somebody professional to come down and ride him and keep him in ridden work because I've just been too scared. A couple of weeks ago and my friend was walking around me and almost "bossing me" around, having a laugh with me and it was the first time in months I had managed to trot without having palpitations so I've been working my bum off the last few weeks to grow on this and last night I managed a few circles of canter!! My boy has been really looking after me, which I know sounds strange but I feel like he really does trust me nowadays (possibly due to sheer amount of ground work I've done whilst being too scared to get on). Cows were running around at one end of the paddock and his field mate went out whilst I was riding and he didn't do a thing wrong. I am honestly so proud of us both! What a success! It's crazy how much your confidence can really take a knock and how much it can hinder your "Skills" as a rider.Anyone else had nice success with confidence? What worked for you?
