California becomes first state in the nation to approve $15 minimum wage

California lawmakers on Thursday approved a historic piece of legislation that will raise the minimum wage from $10 to $15 per hour over the next six years, ushering the state to the forefront of a national movement to lift the pay floor. The measure is **w headed to Gov. Jerry Brown, who is expected to sign it into law on Monday, according to a release.

The first of many incremental increases is slated for Jan. 1, when the current state-wide minimum wage is bumped up to $10.50

Legislators and labor unions hammered out a deal on March 26 to approve the plan, according to the Los Angeles Times. Since then, there have been rumblings that some lawmakers were pushed to the bargaining table only out of fear voters would approve a different, more sudden $15 hike initiative that had qualified for the **vember ballot.
