Pakistan Cup hockey begins today
By our correspondent KARACHI: Pakistan Cup nine-a–side hockey tournament begins at the Abdul Sattar Edhi stadium on Sunday (today), with two matches to be played on the opening day, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) official Naveed Alam told ‘The News’ on Saturday. The first match will be contested by National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) at 7:45pm, while Customs will take on PHF development squad (colors) in the second match. Gover**r Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan will be the chief guest of the opening ceremony. Eight teams are taking part in the event.
Pakistan loses bid to host Asian Netball C’ship
By our correspondent KARACHI: Pakistan on Saturday lost the bid it had filed for hosting the Asian Netball Championship, the country’s netball authorities said. It was Singapore that won the bid for staging the continental event by securing seven votes. Pakistan claimed four, while Sri Lanka got two votes. The decision was taken at the general council meeting of theAsian Netball Federation (ANF) in Thailand on Friday. Pakistan Netball Federation’s (PNF) president Mudassir Arain also attended the meeting. Singapore will host the continental affair in 2018. The Asian Youth Netball Championship was allotted to Korea NetballAssociation (KNA). The event will be held from May 15, 2017. Each country was allotted the Level-1 coaching and umpiring courses.
Contador wins Tour of Burgos title
QUINTANAR DE LA SIERRA, Spain: Alberto Contador secured the Tour of Burgos title on Saturday after a second-place finish on the fifth and final stage in the mountains in **rthern Spain. Contador finished 17 seconds behind Sergio Pardilla after the 163-kilometre route from Caleruega to Lagunas de Neila, with the twotime Tour de France champion pipping his compatriot to overall victory by one second. Belgium’s Ben Hermans came third on the day, posting the same time as Caja Rural rider Pardilla in the general classification. Contador, 33, quit last month’s Tour de France during stage nine after two early crashes in cycling’s most famous race, which then also forced him out of the Rio Olympics. However, Saturday’s victory will serve as a confidence booster ahead of the Vuelta a Espana — a race Contador has won three times—which runs fromAugust 20 to September 11.— AFP

LOS ANGELES, California: Unheralded Tyrone Van Aswegen, whose only two career wins came on the SouthAfrican tour, ismaking a bid for his first victory on the PGA Tour. The 34-year-old South African is trying to snap an American tour winless drought by claiming a share of the second-round lead at the Travelers Championship. Van Aswegen, of Johannesburg, fired a bogey-free, four-under par 66 in Friday’s second round to grab a share of the lead with Daniel Berger, Russell Henley and Aussie Marc Leishman at seven-under 133. American Jerry Kelly, who shared the lead after the first round, headlines a four-way tie for fifth at 134 after firing a 70. Vaughn Taylor and Andrew Loupe shot 71 and 76 to move to 135 and 140, respectively. England’s Paul Casey and Fiji’s Vijay Singh, a former world number one, are also at 135.
