Clearly a lot of people didn't listen or observe in biology lessons or are extremely naive. There are many natural things in this world that to the human eye look like plastic but aren't, our own skin when it peels after sun burn is a great example. I'm not going to waste my time and explain, look in a biology text book or any reputable scientific site online, or buy yourself a microscope. If you are someone gearing up to disagree with this comment A. actually do some very basic READING and RESEARCH first. B. Consider that you might not have been blessed with common sense, low IQ, or just want to believe it's plastic because it somehow makes you life more interesting. C. Go and grow you own lettuce its exactly the same.
