Film director Ken Loach to speak at Liverpool meeting against cuts
</p> RICKY Tomlinson today urged Merseysiders to attend an anti-cuts rally to be addressed by veteran film-maker Ken Loach. The meeting, which will seek to work out a strategy to resist the ongoing government cuts, will take place in The Green Room, in Duke Street, Liverpool city centre, at 7.30pm on Thursday. Actor Ricky said: â??Ken is a very political man and some of his films have actually changed politics in this country.â?* The 74-year-old directed groundbreaking classics including Cathy Come Home, Up The Junction, Poor Cow and Kes. Cathy Come Home, a heart-rending play about a young familyâ??s slide into homelessness â?? first shown as a BBC Wednesday Play in 1966 â?? alerted the nation to the scale of the housing crisis and helped gain the newly-formed organisation Shelter many supporters. His CV also features an array of critically-acclaimed Liverpool-related films and TV shows. They include the hit TV show Z Cars; The Golden Vision, about Everton legend Alex Young; Riff Raff and Raining Stones, which helped relaunch Rickyâ??s acting career; Ladybird Ladybird, starring Crissy Rock; and Land And Freedom, featuring Ian Hart. The Nuneaton-born director, viewed by many as an honorary Scouser, has said: â??People talk a lot about the humour of Liverpool people, but they absolutely miss the politics.â?* Ricky, who will chair Thursdayâ??s event, added: â??The meeting is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Ken will be one of several speakers and there will be a question and answer session.â?* Tony Mulhearn, former president of the Liverpool district Labour party, will also be at the meeting.
