Fans Explain Shakira?s Super Bowl LIV Tongue Wiggle

Last night millions of Fans tuned in for Super Bowl LIV between Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers.


But it was J-Lo and Shakira’s half-time show that really caught people’s attention – with the Colombian’s tongue, in particular, getting viewers talking.


During the performance, the South American singer stared right down the lens of the camera and performed an unusual noise and movement with her tongue.


But while some Fans were confused by it all, others have now come out and put people straight about exactly what Shakira was doing.


As well as being Colombian, Shakira has Lebanese roots, with her name meaning ‘grateful’ in Arabic.


Taking to Twitter, one fan said: “People are so ignorant. Shakira’s ‘tongue thing’ was a ululation. It’s a sound made in Arab cultures typically by women during times of celebration. Shakira is half Lebanese. Grow up. Read a book. Read, anything.”

While another added: “Arab + latin culture ! @shakira you nailed it girl!”


So that’s that settled then.


As for the show itself, it was a whistle-stop tour of the two pop superstars’ hits, including favourites such as ‘Wherever, Whenever’, ‘Hips Don’t Lie’, and – obviously – ‘Jenny From The Block’.


The two singers belted out their hits as dancers performed behind them while waving a massive Puerto Rican flag.


It was a massive show of cultural diversity throughout the performance, with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez being the second Super Bowl halftime performance done by a Latina, after Gloria Estefan. They were also joined by Bad Bunny and J Balvin during the set.

Lopez’s 11-year-old daughter, Emme Maribel, also jumped in to sing the classic ‘Let’s Get Loud’, and showed that she has definitely received her mum and dad’s vocal skills.


The singer shares Emme with her ex-husband Marc Anthony, who tweeted after the performance: “Emme Daddy is so proud of you. You are my [heart] and I am forever yours.”


Before the big game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, Ms Lopez said she wanted to make sure she showed off her heritage during the epic 10-minute show.


“Two Latinas doing this in this country at this time is just very empowering to us,” J-Lo said.


Shakira added: “It’s very important for us to convey a message of unity and also to show what a relevant force the Latin community is in this country.”
