افتراضي The Prince of Egypt is now a West End musical – but one song missed out

The Prince of Egypt has just marked its 21-year anniversary and it’s got a brand-new stage musical adaptation to celebrate it.

Following classic Disney animations like The Lion King and Aladdin, DreamWorks Animation’s Oscar-winning movie has landed in London’s West End, featuring new songs written by original composer Stephen Schwartz.

But in bringing The Prince of Egypt to life, one of the animation’s six songs had to miss out. Don’t worry, it’s not ‘When You Believe’ but ‘Playing With the Big Boys’ that missed the cut.

“[It] was no longer appropriate to the show, because one of the characters [High Priest Huy, voiced by Martin Short] who sang it was eliminated and the whole nature of the other character [High Priest Hotep, voiced by Steve Martin] had changed,” Schwartz told Digital Spy.

“But there are five songs that are in the movie that are in the show. All of them are slightly different than the way they are in the movie, but essentially they do the same storytelling job, and they speak for themselves.”

Even if you’re mourning the loss of ‘Playing With the Big Boys’, the musical adaptation has 10 new numbers to make up for it.

“It’s a full score which utilises 10 new songs or themes or pieces of material. But like any score I write, the themes are going to come back, and there are going to be places where more than one song is sort of happening at the same time in the underscoring or in the finale,” Schwartz explained.

During development for the musical, Schwartz tried to bring back an original song that was cut from the animation, only to realise it “didn’t work here either”.

As a result, all of the new numbers are exactly that, completely new, but he tried to make sure that they fit seamlessly with the five original songs featured, including the Oscar-winning ‘When You Believe’ and the absolute banger that is ‘Deliver Us’.

“I’ve tried to make the score all of the piece. So if you’ve never seen the movie before and didn’t know the songs from the movie, you wouldn’t be able to tell, ‘Oh, this one was written at a different time than that one’,” Schwartz outlined.

Alongside Schwartz on music and lyrics, the musical is based on a book by Philip LaZebnik (who wrote the original movie) and is directed by Scott Schwartz, with choreography by Sean Cheesman.

The Prince of Egypt is currently in previews ahead of its official opening on February 25 and like most shows during previews, there have already been changes to the production in the songs, dialogue and staging.

“It’s been immensely valuable to us to have a couple of weeks of previews in front of audiences, and to get feedback â?? not just from the response of the audience in the theatre, which is the key feedback, but also just hearing from friends,” Schwartz noted.

“I know that the producers have been looking at social media to see if there are sort of things that come up that seem to be mentioned by a lot of people. We’ve tried to address things in terms of clarifying the story, and just making sure that we are communicating the story we want to tell to the best of our abilities.”

But what can fans expect from The Prince of Egypt as a West End musical?

Schwartz has teased that fans can expect “some story surprises” and doesn’t hold back when talking about how it’s been “very imaginatively done”, adding: “I feel that I can safely say that you’ve really never seen anything like this on stage.”

He concluded: “We have heard â?? I should hasten to say â?? from fans of the movie that they’re not disappointed. They don’t seem to feel like we’ve destroyed their experience [of the animation].

“But it is a different experience, and I think people will be surprised by it.”
