The family tragedy which led to new Strictly judge?s charity work
</p> Wirral-born Shirley Ballas may be Strictly Come Dancingâ??s newest judge but she has a far more serious role away from the glitz and glamour of proffesional dancing. As well as long career as one of the worldâ??s top dancers Shirley, 56, who was revealed this week as Len Goodmanâ??s replacement in the BBC1 ratings smash, runs The Ballas Foundation to prevent suicide and defeat the stigma associated with depression. She set up the foundation, along with her son Dancing with the Stars professional Mark Ballas, following the death of her beloved brother David Rich. In blog on Markâ??s website the tragic events which led to his uncleâ??s death are revealed. It reads: â??In 2003, Shirley and Davidâ??s mother travelled to Northern England to help care for David after he became increasingly depressed. Mark, then 17, was scheduled to sing at St Paulâ??s in London. â??Shirley invited her mother to see the performance â?? a one-day journey. That day was enough time for David, who was alone, to act on his depression and kill himself.
