21 migrants attempting to cross Channel intercepted
LONDON: A total of 21 migrants were intercepted after having braved the near-freezing temperatures of the English Channel in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Border Force officers responded to two incidents near Dover, Kent, and arrested one man. In one incident, 11 migrants were discovered at Dover Eastern Docks at 4.54am, the Home Office said. Later, at 6.17am, Border Force was informed of a small boat travelling across the Channel. A cutter vessel was deployed, which intercepted the vessel near Dover. Ten people — including a woman and child — were taken on board the Border Force cutter and brought ashore. One of the men was arrested on suspicion of illegal entry to the UK and was taken to a police station to be interviewed. The remaining cases are being dealt with according to immigration rules, the Home Office said. The nationalities of those involved have yet to be established. Air temperatures near Dover on Tuesday morning were as low as 1C (33.8F), data from the Met Office suggests. Tuesday’s activity follows the rescue of 12 migrants suffering from mild hypothermia off the French coast on Monday. The group — who included two women and a child — were picked up 2.1 nautical miles off Cape Gris-Nez, along the coast from Calais. A Home Office spokesman said: “Those who seek to come to the UK unlawfully and the ruthless criminals who facilitate journeys are all breaking the law and endangering lives. “There has been a doubling of patrols on French beaches, and drones, specialist vehicles and detection equipment have been deployed to stop small boats leaving French shores and arriving in the UK illegally.“Individuals who reach the UK illegally should be in no doubt about our determination to return them to Europe as it is an established principle that those in need of protection should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach.” أكثر... ??????? ??????: 21 migrants attempting to cross Channel intercepted || ??????: ahlam1399 || ??????: اسم منتداك
