LAKKI MARWAT: A Polio vaccination team escaped a suicide attack in Hathi Khan Killay in the jurisdiction of Ghuriwala Police Station adjacent to Serai Naurang tehsil here on Thursday, official sources said.They said the Polio team was busy vaccinating children in Hathi Khan Killay when a suicide bomber suddenly appeared while his two facilitators fled the scene on a motorbike.“Seeing the Polio vaccination team, the suicide bomber blew up in a street near a village mosque at 11:05am,” an eyewitness said.He said the Polio vaccinators miraculously escaped unhurt in the attack and were shifted to a safer place by the local people. A villager was injured by the explosion. After the incident, the personnel of the security forces, police and bomb disposal unit headed by District Police Officer Qasim Ali Khan reached the spot, secured the place and collected the body parts of the bomber.The security forces and police personnel cordoned off the area and launched a search operation for the arrest of the two suspected facilitators seen with the suicide bomber.When contacted, DPO Qasim Ali Khan claimed that the Polio team was not the target of the bomber. “A suicide bomber is not used in attacking the Polio teams as often firearms are used to harm them,” he said.The DPO said the body parts of the suicide bomber, who was around 27-year old, were found scattered in the street. He said a villager was injured in the attack while the Polio team members remained unhurt.He said the police responded quickly as the area is close to the Serai Naurang Police Station although it falls in the jurisdiction of the Ghuriwala Police Station in Bannu district. All the pieces of evidence collected from the site were handed over to the Ghuriwala Police Station to pursue the case, he said, adding, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) registered the case.The sources said the suicide bomber was identified as Waliullah, resident of SherKillay in Serai Naurang,” said an official. It was learnt that the bomber had recently been released from prison. He was the prime suspect in the murder case of the intelligence officials Tariq Khan and Mashal Khan in 2016. He had been arrested by the CTD in this case.
