CJ for uniform education system
LAHORE: Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has underlined the need for a uniform education system as well as uniform curriculum in the country, saying only one book and one uniform could eliminate discrimination in education sector. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court led by the chief justice ordered formation of a committee headed by Higher education Commission (HEC), directing it to make a roadmap to ensure that how the basic education could be provided to every child of the country. Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan were the other members of the bench.
The CJ observed education of children between the ages of five and 16 is the state?s responsibility. Is the state doing its job? Is Article 25-A of the Constitution just for show? He said the court will ensure the enforcement of Article 25-A of the Constitution so that poverty could not become an impediment in the way of poor students. There is no better jewel than education. There should be a level-playing field in the educational setup. The bench directed the officials to prepare a road map of ?one book, one bag and one uniform? for children. ?Why a child of a poor can?t enjoy equal opportunities,? the CJ remarked. It is first time in country? history when a top judge has taken up the matter of provision of basic education to the children.The bench ordered constitution of a committee to be headed by HEC Chairman Dr Mukhtar and comprising secretaries? education from all four provinces, amicus curie Bilal Minto and others. The court directed the committee to hold their meetings, select the educated members and provide a road map in a month?s time as to how education could be provided to every child in the country. ?We appreciate that private schools have great role in imparting education but the question is that how a poor could afford studying there,? the CJ remarked. ?Consciousness comes through the knowledge and educated nations become developed ones,? he further remarked. ?Look at Sri Lanka where literacy rate had gone up to 99 percent,? he addressed the officers present there. ?Garbage has been littered everywhere on the roads. education would give people awareness. They would not spread garbage; education brings change,? he further remarked. The bench observed that they do not want to discourage private sector but it was time for the public sector to deliver.
