Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice or help. I have a 4yr old, 16.2hh ISH who my boyfriend, James, and I bought about 10 months ago, as backed and turned away for winter, ready to bring back into work. We have had quite a lot of issues with Basil being extremely sensitive and whenever he gets scared with a rider on his back he broncs until the rider is on the floor. These times are starting to get fewer and fewer as we spot the things he is nervous of and work on them, e.g. he hated if I moved my arms while I rode him, so I spent a few days getting him used to me waving at him from all angles! The issue we are currently facing is that Basil is terrified of the riders leg contact. I have been working on getting him used to this over the past couple of weeks, but on Monday he panicked when I asked him to be more forward in the trot and he started to bronc. I barely used my legs, but he seems to be super sensitive, some days being worse than others. We can lunge with the stirrups pulled down and flapping around and we can pat his stomach where the riders legs would be with no issues, but once a rider is on board he isn't happy, although won't always bronc, he will sometimes just be tense until he starts to get used to the riders legs. When he does panic completely though it is extreme... so really I just wanted to know if anyone else has had this issue and if so, what did you do to get the horse used to having leg contact? We have had all the obvious checked, back, tack and teeth and no one can find any pain related issues. The physio who looked at his back believes he has had a bad experience and just needs time to get used to all the stresses of having a passenger! Many thanks for reading my essay!! I look forward to hearing from you all :) Karen
