?Brand Britain? has been damaged
LONDON: The boss of Fortnum & Mason, the 310-year-old upmarket grocer, has claimed that ?Brand Britain has been firmly damaged? by the uncertainty around Brexit despite domestic shoppers driving a*23pc boost in annual profits.
Ewan Venters, chief executive of the business best known for its six-storey emporium on Piccadilly, commented that there was a ?slight crisis of identity? within the country.?At the moment I believe brand Britain is firmly damaged and I think action needs to be taken by businesses and the Government.?* Mr Venters said he believed that the ?Government should show leadership and that includes being transparent with the British public about what we are really getting into, as there is going to be an emergence of information that should be debated again at a national level?. The retail boss stopped short of confirming he would back a second referendum on the UK?s exit from the EU. The Fortnum & Mason boss added he believed that the recent Royal engagement would help to ?galvanise the country and show that Britain can do something quite special?.
