افتراضي Islamabad dharna: Army pulled country out of crisis: LHC judge

LAHORE: Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin Ahmad of the Lahore High Court (LHC) Tuesday praised the Army for its role in handling and
defusing the situation arising out of crackdown on
Faizabad sit-in, according to a Geo News report.
He made these remarks a day after Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of Islamabad High Court lashed out at the army's role as the mediator between the protesters and the government. ?Country was at the verge of complete turmoil and everyone knows that Army saved it from a huge disaster,? Justice Amin said, referring to the sit-in by religious parties that had paralysed the capital for three weeks.
The lives of several people would have been lost had the Army not intervened and played its role in fixing the problem, he added. Justice Amin remarked that the picture of martyred Major Ishaq?s daughter with her father?s coffin is a proof of the army?s sacrifices for the country and people. "I could not sleep all night after looking at that picture."
He also expressed annoyance at the ministers speaking against the courts, and asked the additional advocate general Punjab to "teach ministers how to respect the courts".
Justice Ahmad made the remarks about the Faizabad sit-in and agreement while hearing a petition for the recovery of Majlis-i-Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM) leader Nasir Abbas Shirazi, who was allegedly picked up by four armed men in an Elite Force vehicle.
Justice Ahmad also expressed his anger over the inability of security agencies to recover Shirazi. He said the court was aware of their capabilities and it was not a big deal for them to ensure recovery of one person.
Military Intelligence?s Colonel Ahmad informed the court that Shirazi was not in its custody.
The court remarked that it was the constitutional duty of the courts to protect lives and properties of citizens. The court could only ask state institutions to ensure recovery of missing citizens. It had no authority to order Indian secret agency RAW for the recovery of a citizen.
Police also presented a report, suggesting that Nasir made a visit to Balochistan a couple of days before he went missing.
The petitioner, Shirazi's brother claimed that he was picked up days after approaching the court for Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah's disqualification for remarks against Justice Baqir Najfi. However, the police refused to register a case against the law minister.
Justice Ahmad ordered the ISI, IB and other intelligence agencies to ensure recovery of the abductee and adjourned the hearing until Dec 4.Islamabad dharna: Army pulled country
