This week Pottery Barn has announced a dedicated Small Spaces collection, which includes living, dining, bedroom, and office furniture that will be released as part of the brand's Spring 2017 line. The collection focuses on flexibility, an essential consideration for space-starved living quarters. Multifunctional pieces, like a table that serves as storage, a desk, and a dining table, will offer modular solutions meant to increase the potential of a diminutive home. ?We recognize the opportunity to diversify our products and reflect the different ways people live today,? says Marta Benson, EVP and general merchandise manager at Pottery Barn. The small-space movement is driven in equal parts by increased urban living, rising costs, and a greater tendency toward eco-consciousness. Taken together, these factors have resulted in an opening in the market for creative answers to modern living. Last year Yves Béhar, in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab, unveiled plans for Ori, a smart, robotic apartment that moves to accommodate various activities, transforming from living to sleeping to office space automatically. Pottery Barn's collection builds on that idea but markets itself to the discerning customer who has a stake in choosing her own decor. The collection joins similar initiatives by the likes of West Elm, World Market, and IKEA to offer their signature styles in more modest measurements. Where many of these brands skew modern, Pottery Barn's assortment is meant to evoke a more classic vibe, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and silhouettes juxtaposed with innovative functionality. Now there truly can be style for every small space.
