PM?s present tenure longest, full

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s first four years of his third rule as the chief executive, completed on Monday, have been full of massive jolts, shocks and tortuous moments but still this term has turned out to be the longest compared to the two previous relatively shorter tenures.

There was more than one occasion during this period when the premier barely survived in ****** with tremendous difficulty in the face of monumental threats and challenges, thrown by different players, forces and circles. Efforts were persistently made to chop him down to size.

However, despite all the tough time Nawaz Sharif was faced with, he aggressively continued his gigantic development agenda, unheard of in Pakistan’s history. The mega projects, worth billions of dollars, undertaken by his government during the past four years, surpassed his similar ventures started during his earlier two stints, put together. In this journey, the China Pak Eco**mic Corridor (CPEC) projects have the lion’s share.

During this time, the civ-mil relations kept experiencing ups and downs. The prime minister had a good time, smooth ties with Gen Ashfaque Pervez Kayani. Initially, he had ** problem with Kayani’s successor, Raheel Sharif, but with the passage of time tensions developed, which stayed till the last day of his retirement in **vember 2016.

The past six months when Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa has been the army chief have been by and large smooth as far as the civil-military relations are concerned except the “rejected” tweet on the approval of the DawnLeak inquiry report recommendations. But this phase is since history, and the relations are back to **rmal.

The signs that the first bombshell is going to rock Nawaz Sharif had emerged merely a few months after he had taken oath as the prime minister, but it actually fell when long marches were started by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) from Lahore on to Islamabad, which were later converted into protracted sit-ins at Islamabad’s D-Chowk. This protest was most potent threat to the democratic system and the government, but it was thwarted with the combined wisdom and unity of the parliamentary forces. Nawaz Sharif also stood ground.

He had spent only a few months comfortably after the allegations of rigging in the 2013 general elections were trashed by the three-member judicial commission following a comprehensive open inquiry that the mighty blow of Panama Papers came in April last year. Since then, there is ** time for the government to rest. It has been on the tenterhooks, and it is unclear for how long it will be deep in this situation. For the moment, the ultimate outcome of this saga also appears uncertain.

E**rmous troubles, some of them very devastating, apart, the present incumbency produced wonderful results in curbing terrorism through powerful operations including the military campaigns. Particularly, the targeted operation in Karachi, which was kick-started in September 2013, has brought about amazing changes in the law and order situation of the metropolitan. The armed forces and paramilitary forces have played major roles in these campaigns.

On the face of it, the incumbency factor has **t negatively impacted the public standing of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). One indicator of this is that the PML-N has won most of the by-elections over the past four years in Punjab and some other parts of Pakistan.

However, Pakistan’s relations with its neighbours save China during the past four years have significantly gone down. Allegations are being hurled from Afghanistan. India continues to behave as per its track record. Iran is also angry with Pakistan especially after the prime minister’s participation in the US-Arab Islamic Summit in Riyadh. But Islamabad’s relations with Beijing have touched new heights, the only silver lining in this domain.
